EXETER'S Westpoint Arena is to host the world's biggest darts stars next April when the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts makes its debut at the venue.

The tournament sees eight darts stars, including Phil 'The Power' Taylor, battle in a league format over 14 weeks around the UK before the top four battle in the play-offs for the £125,000 first prize.

Premier League Darts has previously been staged at the Plymouth Pavilions, but the Professional Darts Corporation have now opted to switch to the 3,000 capacity Westpoint Arena.

"The south-west is a strong darting area and we're delighted to be taking the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts to the Westpoint Arena," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"Plymouth was one of the most popular venues for the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts, attracting sell-out crowds and I’m sure that the Westpoint Arena will be equally successful.

"The Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts has grown to become the biggest indoor sporting event in the UK over the past four years.

"Its development into a major arena spectacle has been nothing short of sensational - it's the ticket every sports fan in the UK wants!"

The tournament, screened live on Sky Sports, will begin on February 5 in Liverpool and also includes visits to Belfast, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Birmingham before the play-offs in May at the Wembley Arena.

Phil Taylor claimed a fourth successive title in Cardiff in May 2008, and will be one of the eight competitors battling for the £125,000 first prize next year.

"The Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts is a massive tournament now and I love competing in it," said Taylor.

"It was amazing this year to play in front of such massive crowds every week - it was like a Cup Final wherever we went and I'm sure it will be brilliant again next year."
